Description
The state Cultural Heritage Administration has designated "Arirang", a title that refers to a group of similar traditional Korean folk songs, as an intangible cultural asset of the country.
The Administration said that the designation of Arirang as the 129th Important Intangible Cultural Property of Korea is the first such case in which a national cultural property without a possessor or successor has won the cultural heritage title.
The term Arirang includes all forms of Korea's folk songs which are sourced by ordinary people across generations. Lyrics and melodies differ from region to region, with more than 3,600 variations handed down orally.
The designation had been sought by the CHA since Arirang was inscribed on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity Program by UNESCO in December 2012.
