I had my father around as a child, but he didn’t teach my brother how to be a man. If anything (love you dad, but) he taught him really horrible behaviors & he certainly didn’t teach my brother how to be in a loving respectful marriage with a woman. Yet I would consider my brother to be an amazing man & father.

I know plenty of friends who have husbands with anger issues, alcoholic tendencies, drug abuse, etc yet my friends aren’t told these false narratives about their boys and how they are doomed to be less than as they grow older.

Yes, if my son had a GOOD solid male figure, that would be ideal.

But can we stop pretending that becoming a good man is the outcome of a physically present father?

What makes a good man? Someone who understands and respects women. Someone who is honest and with integrity. Someone who wants to care for and protect the ones they love. Someone who does not feel afraid of showing emotions and being honest and vulnerable with their family. Someone who is motivated and wants to do good for the world.

Don’t tell me, or any single mother, that she cannot teach her son those things.

I can’t wait to watch my boy grow into the amazing man that I know he will be one day. And sometimes I think men who grow up with single moms are a little more empathetic + understanding of women in relationships & fatherhood.

But that’s just my take. If we had to find a silver lining 💛
