Description
The Roger Hodgson song "Take The Long Way Home" from the 1979 Supertramp album "Breakfast In America" is the second one I'm posting here on YouTube as a solo piano version. The song consists of many different parts like prelude, intro, etc... (see below) which all have their own stylistic devices. Yes, this wealth of stylistic devices can never be reproduced completely on the piano. The very special attraction of this solo piano interpretation lay in finding a suitable accompaniment for each of the parts and using the stylistic devices from the song in a dosed manner. And that was anything but easy. For the intro, I wanted to play the beautiful, bluesy-sounding harmonica along with Roger's rhythmically accented voicings, plus the bass. I quickly realized that my 10 fingers are not enough.
And the saxophone solo sounds so brilliant, also because something new is added rhythmically and harmonically. The task was to play the swinging melody line of the saxophone in stride piano rhythm.
All in all, it's a piano solo piano rendition that I like and I really hope you like it too.
The song structure in my opinion:
0:00 Prelude:
0:27 Intro:
0:53 Verse:
1:19 Chorus:
1:48 Verse:
2:12 Chorus:
2:41 Saxophone Solo:
3:08 Chorus:
3:36 Final Verse:
3:43 Final:
4:08 Bridge:
4:28 Ending:
Thanks Marvin for arranging and filming the video. As always, it was great fun and an unforgettable Saturday afternoon.
