Performance by violist Neesa Sunar at King Manor Museum in Jamaica, Queens, NYC on Saturday, January 21, 2023.

After I play the piece, I talk about my experience of being a student in conservatory, and the emotional rollercoaster of that experience.

This is the first recital I've performed since 2007! (Forgive the errors.) I developed schizoaffective disorder while completing my bachelors degree in music, and this forced me to give up professional playing for many years. It took many years to get the right medications and a solid system of support that allowed me to rebuild my life.

This performance allowed for me to share my story of trauma and hardship I faced, which led to my development of mental illness over a long period of time. I also share my journey of recovery, and how I've worked hard to maintain it for many years now.

I hope to share my performance and broader ideas with communities all around the world! As a mental health professional with lived history, who has an artistic practice herself, I know firsthand that the mental health needs of artists are sophisticated and an area of specialty. I hope to contribute insights in the fullness of time!
