Each night of the annual Kentucky Music Educators Association (KMEA) conference in Louisville, Kentucky, hundreds of high school All State Choir members join together in singing The Star Spangled Banner. This yearly tradition has gained national attention, and is pretty breathtaking to experience in person. Hundreds of young musicians, lining the balconies of the 18-story Hyatt Hotel in downtown Louisville to round-out each day of the conference by singing our national anthem.

Public school students from all walks of life, from many different schools, places, ideals, races, and faiths. Different backgrounds. Different political beliefs.

We face trying times. Our country is divided in seemingly overwhelming ways. Regardless of your political beliefs, there’s no denying that.

Yet, these young Americans still sing.

Not Republicans, not Democrats, not Independents. Teenagers. Students. Young musicians.

This is the power of public school. This is the power of music. This is the power of the arts. An inspiring reminder of what’s possible - rising together to unite an imperfect nation. Lifting our neighbors up rather than tearing them down.

Young musicians joining together to showcase the promise of what our country represents - freedom and opportunity for all. Loving your neighbor, simply because it is our duty and our privilege as Americans to do so. These kids, and this beautiful tradition, are living proof of that.

There is still hope, my friends. I still believe in the promise of our nation and its flag. I needed this. Hopefully, this blesses you in the same ways that it did me.

Never underestimate the power of music to bring people together. Never.
