Description
The Altered Five Blues Band makes music with a hard, aggressive wink. Working in the often forgotten city of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Altered Five Blues Band has built a huge and well-deserved reputation as a block-rock team with a powerful live presence and the skills and writing techniques to back it up. The group was nominated for a Blues Music Award in 2018 and also won the Independent Music Award and Wisconsin Music Award in the same year. Led by the man-sized vocals of singer Jeff Taylor and powered by guitarist Jeff Schroedl, bassist Mark Solveson, drummer Alan Arber and keyboardist Raymond TevichF, the Altered Five have become a creative force in the modern blues. Their blend of instrumental power, high level, fun songs and vocals, and a genuine enthusiasm for what they're doing makes this group unstoppable. Now the Milwaukee quintet has released their latest album, "Holler If You Hear Me", on the Blind Pig Records label. Recorded over five fast and furious days in Nashville, TN and produced by three-time Grammy winner Tom Hambridge, the 13 original tracks feature the band's skillful songwriting, Taylor's powerful baritone voice and the intuitive musical interaction of the longtime band mates. Harmonica ace Jason Ricci also joins the group on five tracks. Sometimes there are those albums that pick you up from track 1 and don't let go. This sixth album by Milwaukee's Altered Five Blues Band is one of those albums. Altered Five Blues Band's "Holler If You Hear Me" is a strong contemporary blues release. Hard raw blues with high soul content and regular funk. Also, Jeff Taylor has a singer with a very powerful voice and a lot of soul. And don't flatten the rest of the band either. Guitarist Jeff Schroeder can riff very abrasive, but he can also solo very strongly. Mark Solveson (bass) and Alan Arber (drums) form a very swinging and frenetic rhythm section and Raymond Tevich (keyboards) offers both soulful organ playing and funky clavinet playing. The track "If You Go Awaty (She Might Come Back)" is a raging swinger in the best Got My Mojo Working tradition, with booming guitar riffs and vibrant harmonica. Singer Jeff Taylor takes audible pleasure in this song. Ricci joins the guys for the double beat, making a hot solo in the seething shouter advice column. Ricci and Schroedl really hit the road running on "If You Go Awaty (She Might Come Back)," and with a modern Chicago blues approach, Taylor sets a good pace. With a great mix of instrumentation and Arber's tight drum rhythm, this track rocks. Tom Hambridge's masterful production contributes to the success of this recording. The layering of instrumentation is never obstructive. I like the way the guitar is made to sound so close and personal. This is achieved using much of the sound from the small room the amplifier was placed in during recording. When this isn't done correctly, it's like being stuck in a broom closet with the guitarist. But Hambridge shows how to get it right, and there's such an intimacy created that I could be curled up at one end of the sofa with guitarist Schroedl at the other. It's been a while since an album managed to hold me back from beginning to end. The Altered Five Blues Band achieved that with this great album "Holler If You Hear Me" and the Altered Five Blues Band is as good as blues music reaches and dominates most artists in the current scene. "Holler If You Hear Me" an album where "just" is all right! Load this disc and set it high. Recommendable!!!
