The USA used the first atomic bomb to end WW2 in 1945 in Hiroshima, Japan. It sparked an arms race between the USA and the USSR which cost both sides billions and led to a situation which could destroy the world many times over. Meanwhile, the Western powers united to form NATO, to protect one another against possible invasion by the USSR and when they invited West Germany to join in 1955, the USSR formed the Warsaw Pact to act as a buffer zone to protect the USSR from Western invasion.

This video covers the Edexcel GCSE History syllabus for Superpower Relations and the Cold War 1941-91. It will be useful no matter which exam board you are studying though.
