The programme violin concerto ‘’The Butterfly Lovers’’ is one of the most popular pieces of modern Chinese music. It is based on a Chekiang opera, which retells the old story of the lovers Liang Shan-po and Chu Ying-tai. The violin concerto was written in 1959. the violin is used in a manner that recalls the technique of the two-string Chinese violin : Er-hu.
