Miles Cleret's Soundway label bring us this five-track mini-album from The Lahaar, a trans-Tasman (read: Aussie and Kiwi) five-piece who cite their influences as "late 70s NYC proto-rap disco instrumentals, Nigerian boogie, Jamaican dub and modern jazzy house". The straight-up funk vibes of 'Doin' It' kick off proceedings, after which we take a left turn into dubwise terrritory for 'Step 2'. 'Work Work Work' then comes on like a long-lost Lee 'Scratch' rework of a 70s soul ballad, before things get livelier again with 'Super (Kiki)', a brass-sporting jazz-funker with some very cool keys action, and 'Chase Scene, Part 1', another slab of Blaxploitation-style raw funk goodness. Good stuff... more, please!
