Description
Borderlands 2 is a first-person shooter with robust role-playing elements, celebrated for its distinctive cel-shaded art style, irreverent humor, and addictive loot-driven gameplay. Set on the dangerous, dystopian planet Pandora, players assume the role of one of four Vault Hunters, embarking on a quest to defeat the charismatic but ruthless antagonist, Handsome Jack. The game thrives on its procedurally generated weapon variety, cooperative multiplayer, and a compelling narrative enriched with witty dialogue and memorable characters. Beyond its main story, Borderlands 2 offers extensive side quests and downloadable content, contributing to its critical acclaim and enduring appeal as a beloved and influential title in the gaming community.
Within this chaotic universe, the side mission "The Name Game" exemplifies Borderlands 2’s unique blend of humor and self-awareness. Initiated by Sir Hammerlock in Sanctuary, the quest centers on his fervent desire to rename the common Bullymong creature, a playful jab at the game's own development struggles with the creature’s nomenclature.
The mission unfolds as Hammerlock dispatches the player to Three Horns – Divide to examine Bullymong habitats for naming inspiration. Through ECHO communications, Hammerlock proposes several increasingly absurd names. Initially, the Bullymongs become "Primal Beasts," a name quickly rejected by his unseen publisher. This leads to the next iteration: "Ferovores."
It’s at this point the mission introduces the objective: "Shoot ferovore projectiles." To achieve this, players must provoke the Ferovores—essentially the same four-armed, ape-like creatures—into throwing their typical rock or ice projectiles. The task requires shooting three of these airborne objects before they hit. Maintaining distance encourages their ranged attacks, and a shotgun can be effective for intercepting the projectiles. The "Slinger" variant is particularly adept at throwing.
Following this, Hammerlock's frustration with his publisher's pickiness culminates in a hilarious, exasperated renaming: "Bonerfarts," with even the younger Monglets becoming "Bonertoots." The final task is simply to kill five of these "Bonerfarts." Upon completion, Hammerlock, defeated, resigns himself to the original "Bullymong" name. A delightful quirk of the mission is that abandoning the quest at the "Bonerfart" stage permanently renames the creatures in the player’s game, providing an amusing, lasting inside joke.
