I didn't realize til I heard the isolated bass tracks that Sting actually played this on a fretless - so I decided to give it a go! The bass is a partscaster fretless with Aguilar pickups - and is running into an Origin Effects Cali 76 Bass Compressor then into a Noble Bass Preamp.
