The sound of the world's deepest organ pipe!
Boardwalk Hall 64 ft deepest Pipe Organ

The world's deepest organ pipe: What does it sound like?

In the previous YouTube (Reger), I used the 64ft stop, but it is difficult to hear it over the full-organ sound. So, here is a recording of the 64ft stop on its own... I am playing the deepest note on the organ (the lowest C on the pedals).

The organ at Boardwalk Hall is the largest in the world and it has the deepest organ pipe in the world: The 64ft Diaphone-Dulzian played by the feet on the pedals.

There are only two true 64ft organ pipes in the world, this one and the 64ft pedal reed in the Sydney Town Hall organ. Other organs may have a 64ft-stop listed, but they are created in another way, for example, by playing two shorter pipes together to create a 64ft effect.

At Atlantic City (& Sydney) the deepest note is produced by a pipe that is actually 64ft in length. In Sydney's case it is a reed stop, so the sound is produced by a (relatively) thin vibrating metal strip. At Atlantic City it is a Diaphone, so the sound is produced by a vibrating valve: This is the same technology as in a fog-horn. A Diaphone stop can be powered by a higher pressure than a reed. At Atlantic City, the wind pressure of the 64ft is: 35 inches (889 mm). At Sydney, the wind pressure is 4.5 inches (115 mm).

The pipes are made of solid wood (sugar pine) that is 3 inches thick. The lowest pipes rise vertically for about 40ft and are then mitred so that they continue horizontally at the top of the pipe chamber for their full length. The longest pipe weighs 1.5 tonnes (3,350 pounds).

The frequency of the lowest note (CCCCC) is 8 Hz.
