Third Time’s The Charm, the latest LP from the Emmy-nominated trumpeter-vocalist-composer, presents a staggering display of charisma and talent. Benack’s an entertainer through and through, a do-it-all showman with serious skill and an infectious personality that shines through his music. And on his — you guessed it — third album, he puts it all together, crafting a listening experience with the arc of a sumptuous two-set show at a New York jazz club.

From beginning to end, the sheer range Benack displays is beyond delightful. One moment he’s crooning. Next he’s delivering a show stopping horn solo. But wait, now he’s switched to scatting and vocalese. In between, he’s hollering at his band, egging them on. Benack debuts nine original songs on Third Time’s The Charm, each inspired by different currents from within the jazz lineage, each spotlighting a different facet of his artistry.

“I’ve been out on the road workshopping,” he notes, fresh off a recent travel schedule that’s taken him from Mexico to Saudi Arabia, with Japan soon to follow, “and I feel like I perfected the formula from my previous two albums. I still get tagged in stories from the news in Venezuela, some guy and girl singing [Benack’s original] ‘Social Call’. Or someone in Indonesia is playing the transcription. And I really love that. People who liked the last record are gonna love this one.”
