Description
Rutland Boughton's opera, THE IMMORTAL HOUR, was first performed in Glastonbury on August 26th 1914, at the inaugural Glastonbury Festival which Boughton co-founded. Boughton sang the bass role of Dalua, replacing a singer who had fallen sick. The opera later ran in London for 216 consecutive performances in 1922, and for a further 160 performances the following year, and was staged in New York City in 1926. It was revived at the Sadler's Wells Theatre in London in 1953. In 1949, the Australian soprano, Glenda Raymond, made her British debut in the role of Etain with the London Philharmonic Orchestra. We hear an excerpt from towards the end of the opera - from "How Beautiful They Are" (better known as the "Faery Song") through the next scene. Midir is performed by the wonderful Australian tenor, Thomas Edmonds, and Etain, by soprano Marilyn Richardson. The Adelaide Symphony Orchestra is conducted by Georg Tintner in this performance from June 2nd, 1979.
