La Boca is the old port area of Buenos Aires, where countless thousands of immigrants first stepped foot on Argentinian soil and which was closely associated with the early days of tango. With cranes offloading ships' cargos, passengers arriving an departing, trucks lining up with freight to load or unload; dockers, agents and all manner of workmen going about their business, it was a bustling area. In the first part of the twentieth century, tram lines criss-crossed the area in all directions. The trams carried a long crowbar for the motorman to operate the points and change lines while the driver used two handles to control the vehicle. One handle was the brake. The other controlled the tram's speed and was numbered 1-9. The nine points inspired Francisco Canaro to name this tango "Nueve Puntos", which he first recorded in 1920, though later versions by Carlos Di Sarli have become the most loved.
