The hymn "Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus" was written by Helen H. Lemmel in 1922. The song was inspired by a simple yet profound phrase Helen encountered in a religious pamphlet: "So then, turn your eyes upon Him, look full into His face, and you will find that the things of earth will acquire a strange new dimness." This thought moved her deeply and led her to compose the now-beloved hymn.
Helen was a gifted musician and lyricist who faced personal hardships, including losing her sight later in life. Despite her challenges, she remained devoted to her faith and ministry, often expressing her trust in God through her music.
The central message of the hymn is about finding hope, peace, and a renewed perspective by focusing on Jesus. The lyrics remind us that when we fix our gaze on Christ, the trials and distractions of this world fade in comparison to the joy and glory found in Him.
