The kernel of this song came about after reading Hans Rosling’s Factfulness, and subsequent conversations around our natural human biases. Much of the divisiveness today is present within the media, social media, echo-chambers and the like. And it seems that this has only been exacerbated by our natural reactions towards fear, particularly our fear of the unknown. Writing the lyrics for “Rialto” was a meditation on this, and an attempt to put words to some of the feelings that arise. We are all just making our way as best we can, and there is grace in that. The question ‘how are we to treat others?’ answered ‘there are no others’—attributed to Ramana Maharshi, a wise man—is at play here, too. - Martin Howley
