Description
"We Three Kings" was written in 1857 by John Henry Hopkins Jr, rector of Christ Episcopal Church in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, during his final year of teaching at the seminary. Although Hopkins wrote this carol for a Christmas pageant held at the college, it was sung mostly by his family and friends. In 1863, he published the carol in his book Carols, Hymns, and Songs, and it became the first Christmas carol from the United States of America to become internationally popular.

We Three Kings of Orient are,
Bearing gifts we traverse afar,
Field and fountain, Moor and mountain,
Following yonder Star.
O Star of Wonder, Star of Night,
Star with Royal Beauty bright,
Westward leading, Still proceeding,
Guide us to Thy perfect Light.
Born a King on Bethlehem's plain,
Gold I bring to crown Him again,
King for ever, Ceasing never
Over us all to reign.
Frankincense to offer have I,
Incense owns a Deity nigh:
Prayer and praising, gladly raising,
Worship Him God on High.
Myrrh is mine; its bitter perfume
Breathes a life of gathering gloom;—
Sorrowing, sighing, Bleeding, dying,
Sealed in the stone-cold tomb.
Glorious now behold Him arise,
King, and God, and Sacrifice;
Hallelujah, hallelujah,
sounds through the earth and skies.
