Did you know there are 2 main categories of Marigold cultivars? African marigolds are tall plants (3-4FT) with large blooms on sturdy stems making them a great choice for the back of flower beds or for cut flowers. French marigolds are compact plants with smaller blooms. They are a better option for companion planting under veggie crops or growing in smaller gardens and containers. If you want to plant marigolds to combat/deter nematodes, then grow the French varieties because research demonstrates they are the best type to decrease nematode populations in the soil. Both cultivars have a strong scent that repels a lot of pests.
