So, in acquiring a passport, some biometric information is extracted from the potential holder. These include fingerprints and a photo of the person.
Regarding the passport photo, this is not just a normal photo taken for the literal identification of a person. There is a lot of scanning which goes on when the photo is taken. A computer software scans and measures the facial features of a person's face, such as the width of the mouth, the distance between the two eyes, and whatnot. In essence, it is vital to keep a straight face during the photo shoot.
A smile can distort the neutral look on the face and make it difficult for the software to accurately map out the face for future recognition or identification.
