My cover of the song by The Police, from their 1984 album 'Synchronicity'.

Sting describes it as a very spiteful song about turning the tables on someone that's in a position of power, and mentions that it is inspired by someone in his own life, though with shades of 'Faust' and 'The Sorceror's Apprentice' thrown in. The song makes reference to several monsters of Greek mythology.

As for my own impressions, I can never sing this song without thinking about either the characters Raistlin and Dalamar from the Dragonlance series of fantasy novels, or about Sauron's ring from Lord of the Rings. I guess that there's something about the imagery in the song that just brings out my inner fantasy nerd.

The arrangement that I use for the song is something from back in the days when I sang regularly with Dan Lindenberger and Stacy Hilton under the group name 'Polaris Rising'.
