Description
“Isn’t This a Lovely Day?” is a song by Irving Berlin, written in 1935 for the film Top Hat. In the movie, it is performed by Fred Astaire in a charming scene with Ginger Rogers. The two characters, caught in a sudden rainstorm, take shelter in a gazebo. Rather than treating the bad weather as an inconvenience, the song turns it into a moment of intimacy. Berlin’s lyrics playfully contrast the gloomy weather with the warmth of companionship, framing the rain as an unexpected gift rather than a setback.
The melody has a gentle, lilting quality, matching the lighthearted optimism of the words. Its structure allows for both swing and tenderness, making it a natural fit for jazz interpretation. Indeed, the song became a standard, recorded over the decades by artists such as Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong, Sarah Vaughan, Diana Krall, and Tony Bennett.
This rendition of the classic has been arranged for choir by Jonas Rasmussen, and was performed in Davidskirken in Copenhagen on the 18th of July 2025
